Jalandhar: Punjab Revenue & Public Relations Minister and President Punjab Rifle Shooting Association Bikram Singh Majithia today announced that the State government would soon set up three ultra modern shooting training Centers, one each in Majha, Malwa and Doaba regions of Punjab to groom the budding talent in the sport of shooting as Punjab has a long history of producing top shooters including the only Olympic gold medalist of the country Abhinav Bindra.
While interacting with media persons after presiding over the prize distribution ceremony of 50th Punjab State Shooting Championship and 16th Punjab Inter School Championship held here at PAP shooting range, Majithia said that the Punjab government has set the target for maximum representation of Punjabi players in Indian contingent for Rio Olympic – 2016 and identified shooting as a major sport for increasing the medal tally of country. He pointed out that the State has enough talent available for shooting and at junior level, the number of budding shooters has increased manifold in last 1-2 years and we have chalked a long term strategy to nourish this talent.
Talking about the initiatives of Punjab government for up-gradation of infrastructure for shooting, the Minister said that Rs. 6 crore has already been sanctioned for shooting ranges, out of which Rs. 165.47 lac would be spent on up-gradation of shooting range at SAS Nagar while the shooting ranges at village Badal would be upgraded at a cost of Rs. 294.03 lac. “The shooting ranges at village Talwara in Ludhiana and PAP Jalandhar would be provided with state-of-the-art facilities amounting to Rs. 71 lac and Rs. 29.50 lac respectively”, he added. He said that all these shooting ranges would be equipped with electronic targets.
The Minister also said the joint efforts of Punjab government and PRSA for promotion of shooting has shown remarkable results as the participation of shooters in shooting championship increased to 750 from 300 in just one year.
He said that the State Government was committed to provide all necessary facilities including provision of world class training from foreign coaches to the players. He revealed that sports budget in state has been enhanced to Rs 200 crore annually from a paltry sum of Rs 12 crore on Congress regime.
Commending the bravery shown by the Punjab Police in foiling Dinanagar terrorist attack, the Minister has also announced the grant of Rs 32 lac for up-gradation of PAP Shooting Range.
Meanwhile, in the Air pistol (Junior women ), Disha has ensured the first position, followed by Tiranjot Kaur and Sarita Kumari . Besides that in sports Rifle -3P Junior women event , the winners were Namrata Arora , followed by Chahatdeep Kaur .
In Sports Rifle 3P women, Sandeep Kaur has attained first position, where Lovepreet Kaur stood second and Babanpreet Kaur remained on third spot.
In men’s 3P, Amandeep singh, Munish gill and Abay Raj Toor have attained the first three positions. Besides that in centre fire man event, Maninder singh was declared winner whereas Arashdeep Singh remained on second spot and Hunardeep Singh on third .
In the Sports rifle 3P women event , Avneet Kaur Sidhu has registered the victory whereas Namrata Arora remained on second place and chahatdeep Kaur on third place.
In Standard Pistol men event, the first position was achieved by Sukhdev Singh Cheema, second by Jasbir singh and third by Maninder singh.
Prominent amongst present on the occasion included MLA Pargat Singh, Deputy Commissioner Kamal Kishor Yadav, ADGP Sanjeev Kalra, Secretary of Punjab Oylmpic Association Raja K Sidhu, Chairman Zila Parishad Hoshiarpur Sarbjot Singh Sabhi, Parminnder Brar and Secretary sports PAP Navjot Mann.
