Chandigarh: The Medical Education and Research Ministry of Punjab Government in a notification hiked the fee of MBBS/BDS courses by 300% in Government Medical Colleges. Earlier, the fee was Rs. 26,250 for the first year but according to the new notification, the fee is Rs. 80,000 for the first year for the session 2015.
In second, third, fourth and fifth years, the fee will be Rs. 90,000, Rs. 1 Lakh, Rs. 1.1 Lakh and Rs. 60,000 respectively. Notably, in fifth year, the curriculum includes internship in the hospital.
Earlier the fee was Rs. 26,250 for first, second and third years and Rs. 28,350 for fourth and fifth years.
The private medical colleges are charging from Rs. 2.2 Lakh in first year with 10% hike every year which reaches Rs. 3.2 Lakh in final year.
The fee of MBBS/BDS in nearby states like Himachal Pradesh is 7 times less than Punjab.
The steep hike in the tuition fee of Government Medical Colleges has ruined the dreams and hopes of many economically weaker students.
