Jalandhar: Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal will honour 308 international medal winners during an impressive ceremony to be held at Lovely Professional University Phagwara on July 16.
Disclosing this, a spokesman of State sports Department said this function was earlier scheduled to be organised at Ludhiana but due to weather conditions it was planned to be held at LPU.
He added that out of total 3,726 players selected for awarding cash prizes, 308 international medal winners in world cups, Asian championships, Commonwealth and National Games would be awarded with cash prizes worth Rs. 9 crore.
He said the department would hand over the cash prizes to the medal winners in senior national competitions, national school games, inter-university games and senior state championships including Paralympics on the instructions of Deputy Chief Minister to boost the players at grass root level.
In this category, total 3,726 players have been selected by the department after evaluating their achievements. These players would be awarded with cash prizes worth Rs. 6 crore.
He informed that Punjab Government has invited applications from medal winners from 2011 to 2015 in various level games and selected 831 players in 2010-11, 518 in 2011-12, 745 in 2012-13 and 1470 in 2013-14 and 2014-15 (2 years) for cash prizes. Besides, 164 medal winners from National games 2015 were also selected for cash awards. These players would be honoured by the cabinet ministers and chief parliamentary secretaries in their respective districts. Schedule in this regard would be announced very shortly by the concerned district sports officers, he added.
It may be mentioned here that the players who were found positive in dope tests during the events were declared ineligible for cash prizes.
He also said 28 medal winners in Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2014 and Asian games 2014 were awarded in November last year with cash prizes of Rs. 5.43 crore.
