Jalandhar: Punjab Congress leader and Kapurthala MLA Rana Gurjeet Singh today strongly condemned the brutal lathi-charge on protesting teachers and asked Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal to explain whether lathi-charge was the only way to communicate with peaceful protesters.
Reacting to the Sunday incident that happened in Bathinda, where EGS and AIESTR teachers demanding regularisation were lathicharged, Rana Gurjeet Singh said that this was most unfortunate that the police were used to crush the voice and demands of teachers.
“All they were demanding was an audience with the Chief Minister so that they can list their demands and request him to consider those sympathetically. It is surprising that the CM who boasts of Sangat Darshans and spends days and days meeting people trying to prove that he was a man of masses, could not spare a few minutes to meet the agitating teachers,” Rana said.
The Congress leader said that it was quite unfortunate that the five times chief minister who claims to be the tallest leader of the country has become so insensitive towards the demands of the people that in his ‘Raj Nahin Sewa’ regime, peaceful protesters including women carrying children get beaten this way.
He said, “The Chief Minister, who always talks of strengthening the democracy needs some introspection and also needs to explain as to whether there could be different meanings of democracy, one for him and one for those who dare to come out on streets to demand their legitimate due.”
He said that this was saddening that the police were being time and again used to scare away the protesters and beat them brutally. The Congress leader said that the CM needs to understand that this was a dangerous trend as it was creating hatred among the people of the state against the police.
