Jalandhar: Senior Congress leader and Kapurthala MLA Rana Gurjeet Singh has demanded constitution of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the nexus between some politicians, police officials and drug mafia in Kapurthala.
In a letter to the Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal, the Kapurthala MLA urged him to constitute a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe and identify the culprits of drug smuggling in Kapurthala and their nexus with politicians claiming proximity to you and the police.
“They are our enemies and they deserve to be dealt with a firm hand and a message needs to be sent across loud and clear that no matter which party they belong to, they are enemies of Punjab and will not be spared”, he urged the Deputy CM.
Referring to a recent incident involving an ex-block Samiti member from Akali Dal who was caught with 2.5 kgs of heroin, Rana said, “Parminder Singh Mina from Kapurthala, who later turned out to be an international drug smuggler, was arrested by the Jalandhar police with two and a half kgs of heroin”.
“He (Minta) is an ex-block Samiti member from Kapurthala and a prominent Akali leader of the area. He was being patronised by the local Akali leaders including Sarabjit Singh Makkar and Ranjeet Singh Khojewal. And it is a public knowledge that he belongs to Akali Dal and is a protégé of Makkar and Khojewal”, Rana alleged in the letter.
Rana said, “By mentioning his Akali identity, I do not intend to cast any direct aspersions on you. And it is quite unlikely that you may be aware about this person irrespective of the claims made by his mentor Ranjeet Khojewal and others claiming proximity with you and Revenue Minister Bikram Singh Majithia. And they apparently do it to enjoy immunity from the law so that they remain untouched”.
He observed, that was the reason Minta, despite being an international heroin smuggler was not caught by the Kapurthala police. “Why is it that a smuggler from Kapurthala can be arrested by the Jalandhar police but not the Kapurthala police despite knowing everything?” he asked, adding, this was because he enjoyed patronage at the local level and he continued with drug smuggling.
